Inside Projects

The Fugly Kitchen!

Country “not so” chic is one way to describe this kitchen. Powder blue laminate counter tops, loud flower print wall paper and a bright red sink. Not my cup of tea at all!

We’ve started and stopped this project a number of times, I’d much rather putter in my garden or tend to my critters than scrape and peel and paint a kitchen. We’d get some wallpaper off in a weekend, then not get back to it for months, it was so terribly ugly for so terribly long!

Finally, we gathered out gumption and we are going all out to get this done!

The Before
Steaming off the terrible wallpaper!

Part of what has taken us to long to dig into this project was the daunting task of removing this wall paper. This stuff was super hard to get off. We tried the paper tiger tool, the Dif spray and scraping but all we managed to accomplish was tearing up the drywall behind the paper.

To add insult to injury, under this hideous wallpaper there was yet ANOTHER layer of wallpaper to remove. Ugh!

We finally broke down and bought a steamer and it made this a doable task. I’m not saying it was easy but it was possible. We removed the wallpaper and washed the walls down to remove all the glue.

Hubs had the idea to tear out this bulkhead and I was all for it! For all the world it just looked like we had giant Christmas presents sitting on top of our cabinets all year long.

It was a lot harder project than we thought, the bulkhead was framed out with metal studs. I’m not gonna lie, it took a sledge hammer and a sawzall to get this monstrosity out of the way.

Look at that bulkhead!
It did not want to go

The bulkhead put up a good fight but was no match for hubs tools and brute strength!

Finally the deed was done but now there was more ceiling work to do!

Lucky for me, that was not my job to repair!
